I have been BEGGING Eric to let me paint the fireplace white. It just needs a fresh look. He, however thinks its too risky. What's risky about white, I ask??? These are just a few pictures that I have found, (I'm sorry, I'm absolutely HORRID at remembering to source them) to try to convince him. What do you think? Yes it would look great? No, thats a terrible idea? I need help!

I don't care for painted brick but that is my opinion and that may be where Eric gets it from. I like the warmth of the natural color. He is more of his past experience than I thought.
i love the look but for resale purposes..i wouldn't. It would take a lot of work to get it back to the natural red color and potential buyers might see that and not want to put in the effort. Plus..people do like traditional red brick around here... BUT..I would prefer the white over the red.
I love the look too and was going to say go for it....However I agree with dawn and taylor though that it "might" affect the resale but it's not something that would deter me (personally). AND SINCE you have great taste, I say go for it!!! :)
The last picture before your current room is nice. I like it because of the woodtone mantel and the color on the walls beside the fireplace. The others look way too formal.
i love the white mantels! i was going to say yeah go for it, but i never really thought about the resale value. hmm, maybe other people don't like white fire places as much? who knows. but i love the look!
i much prefer the natural look of the brick and agree w/ mama dawn that it has a warmth that i'm not sure painted white would parallel. i guess that's why i'm attracted to a miller b/c i think chris would say the same. ya gotta do what works for you all but if you are taking a poll, that's my vote.
hmmm for me, design is allllll about context...and i'm not sure that the white fireplace would fit in with the rest of your home. it would seem a little...inauthentic to me? i don't want to just give your my "i wouldn't" and not give a counter suggestion....so i will consider and get back to you on that :)
Let me qualify a little more...
Lets assume that everything that is done has a purpose behind it (which, would be GOOD design). So, I'm going to say it is a good idea to paint a fireplace white when the brick is looking nasty (after many, many years of lots of fires leaving suit), or when you want to "hide" the fireplace in with the rest of the white walls - so as to give it a flush look that makes the space look bigger....ORR it truly just "feels" right with the rest of the building.
I can say that I do like white fireplaces, in a space that calls for white fireplaces....and my gut is saying that it just isn't that particular home you are in. Maybe the next??
(Just wanted to give more of a reason and not sound like a...jerk!)
I feel for you. We are in an apartment, so there is little we can do to change things. My parents painted their fireplace white and it fits in their home SO much better than brick, but this house isn't their first. Maybe painting fireplaces and such is a right of passage once you settle in your dream home and don't have to worry about resale.
Yeah, I think you are right. All of you.:) I think one day I'll have my white fireplace but we still have plenty of other homes we will live in and this one, even thought we plan on renting it out when we leave, we do plan to sell one day. Eric wins.:) And I'm okay with it. I'll just paint everything else white!!!;)
yes, yes!! painted white brick is my favorite!! the classy kind....
my dream house is a huge old brick thing painted white with black shutters and a red door. way tmi but, seriouslyyyy.... do it!!
